UPCTools FAQ
What are UPC barcodes used for?
UPCs are retail barcodes that you see on items headed for the checkout line. If it makes a cash register "beep", it's probably a UPC barcode. Other barcodes associated with UPCs are ISBN-13 barcodes for books and other published items; EAN barcodes for items in the international retail channel; and ISSN barcodes, an international code for serial publications like magazines. All of these barcode types are numbers-only.
What kind of data can be put into a UPC barcode?
A UPC barcode is made up of a unique company prefix, a shorter product identification number and a mod-10 check digit. An ISBN-13 barcode is three segments- the language or country of origin, the publisher, the individual book number- plus a mod-10 check digit. An ISSN barcode consists of two groups of four digits, with the eighth character a mod-11 check digit.
What check digit and/or special start and stop character does a UPC barcode have?
The UPC mod-10 check digit is the 12th digit in the lower-right corner of the barcode. The ISBN mod-10 check digit is on the right-hand side of the barcode.
